Florida school transfers the poem "The Hill We Climb"

As we know, Florida is in the centre of the discussion over book bans, especially as more time and money are invested in determining which books belong in school libraries and to whom they should be accessible.

Following a complaint, A Florida School transfers the poem “The Hill We Climb” to the middle school section.

According to CBS News Miami partner the Miami Herald, a parent of a student at Miami Lakes’ K–8 Bob Graham Education Complex objected to the book and complained, leading to its removal from elementary-level access.

The complaint alleged that the content is not instructional, conveys hate indirectly, confounds kids, and indoctrinates them. Furthermore, it mistakenly claimed that Oprah Winfrey wrote the book.

This comes after Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed for the legalization of censorship and challenged books based on whether they were suitable for kids in schools.

The Stop Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees Act (also known as the “Stop WOKE Act”), which would enable parents to sue school districts that promote critical race theory, was unveiled by DeSantis on December 15, 2021. By prohibiting instruction that could lead some people to believe they bear “personal responsibility” for historical wrongdoings because of their race, gender, or national origin, as well as instruction that teaches that people are “inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously,” the bill aims to combat “woke indoctrination” in Florida businesses and schools.

“The district’s review process as required by HB 1467, which mandates that any library or instructional books must be reviewed by a district employee with a valid educational media specialist certificate, to make sure that they don’t contain porn or banned lessons on racism”.

“At one Miami-Dade school, there has been debate about a book that is based on a poem written by Amanda Gorman, the first National Youth Poet Laureate”.

The book and the poem are titled The “Hill We Climb”.

The Hill We Climb” is a spoken word poem written by American poet Amanda Gorman and recited by her at the inauguration of Joe Biden (President of USA) in Washington, D.C. on January 20, 2021.

Summary of “The Hill We Climb”.

“The Hill We Climb” is 723 words long. It begins with the line: “When day comes, we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade?” and then describes the storming of the Capitol as “a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it” before stating that, “while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.

Gorman said that,” it robs children of a right to free thought and speech”. The book’s removal could be something that is challenged in court.

IMiami-Dade schools issued a statement,”No literature (books or poem) has been banned or removed. It was determined at the school that The Hill We Climb is better suited for middle school students and, it was shelved in the middle school section of the media center. The book remains available in the media center.”
